Heel Prick Update

By Meida van Baal, Doula and Maternity Nurse

A newborn is usually screened for metabolic diseases between 72-96 hours after the birth. This test is not compulsary. In the past, parents were only informed of a positive result, so 'no news is good news' meant your baby did not test for any diseases.  However, as of March 1, 2020, the RIVM, or the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, will inform all parents of the results of the newborn heel prick. Expect a letter of the results within 5 weeks.
